Fight Overview: Two guys once considered top Heavyweights because of their work outside of UFC who have had trouble translating their success to the Octagon. With both men coming off multiple high-profile losses, this is a big fight for their futures.
Rothwell’s Strengths: Rothwell is very large, has good wrestling, dangerous submissions from top position, a lot of punching power, and a lot of experience.
Rothwell’s Weaknesses: Rothwell isn’t world-class at any one aspect of fighting, and has shown a weakness for getting knocked out by top strikers.
Cro Cop’s Strengths: Cro Cop has excellent striking, with power in both hands and both feet. His striking is also very technical and quick, and in the past he has shown great takedown defense.
Cro Cop’s Weaknesses: Cro Cop appears to have lost a step or two as he has grown older, which makes his standup slightly less powerful, his chin more spotty, and affects his once-legendary takedown defense. Even at his prime, he was not very good once a fight went to the ground.
The Verdict: As great as Cro Cop once was, he has just slowed down too much to keep up with a guy as big, strong, and well-rounded as Rothwell. Cro Cop is not a very big Heavyweight, and the size disadvantage is going to allow Rothwell to bully him around and eventually get this fight to the ground, where he will control, soften up, and submit him.
